Seasonal Flu Vaccine for Children

Jan. 27, 2010: A limited supply of FluMist is available for healthy people ages 2 years to 49 years without chronic diseases such as asthma, heart disease or diabetes. TCHD has no injectable seasonal flu vaccine available. Call 607-274-6609 for an appointment or additional information.

Nov. 23, 2009: The Tompkins County Health Department has completed seasonal flu vaccinations for children. Check with your doctor’s office if your child is still in need of a seasonal flu vaccination.

Nov. 18, 2009: No change in status regarding seasonal flu vaccine for children.

Nov. 12, 2009: No change in status regarding seasonal flu vaccine for children.

Nov. 4, 2009: Tompkins County Health Department no longer has any seasonal flu vaccine for children ( age 6 months through 18 years). TCHD does not anticipate receiving any more seasonal flu vaccine for children at this time. Parents and care givers are encouraged to call their physicians for seasonal flu vaccinations for their children.

Oct. 21, 2009: Seasonal flu vaccine for children is again available. Parents and caregivers may call the Health Department at 274-6609 to make an appointment for their child. Children between the ages of 6 months and 18 years of age may receive the vaccine at TCHD for no charge.

Oct. 16, 2009: All doses of seasonal flu vaccine for children that TCHD received from the NYSDOH have been alloted. Vaccine is available for all scheduled appointments, however future appointments for children to receive seasonal flu vaccine are not currently available at TCHD. If new supplies of seasonal flu vaccine for children become available at TCHD, notice will be given on this Website and on the TCHD Flu Hotline, 607-274-6609.

Oct. 7, 2009: Seasonal flu vaccine for children between the ages of 6 months and 18 years old is available at the Tompkins County Health Department. TCHD has received a limited supply of seasonal flu vaccine for children. There is no charge for this vaccine.

Nov. 12, 2009: No additional seasonal flu clinics are being scheduled at this time. TCHD has completed the re-scheduled clinics that were previously postponed in September and October.

Nov. 5, 2009: Continuing to reschedule appointments made for the Sept. & Oct. clinics that were postponed. New appointments are not yet available for adults not previously scheduled for a postponed clinic.

Oct. 21, 2009: TCHD has received more seasonal flu vaccine for adults and will honor the appointments that were made for the clinics that were postponed starting with the late September clinics. Staff is in the process of confirming prescheduled appointments for those clinics. A delay in distribution of the seasonal flu vaccine caused the postponements. Complete vaccine update for Oct 21 »

Oct. 16, 2009: There continues to be no supply of seasonal flu vaccine for adults available at TCHD. Because TCHD has no doses for adults, and dates for resupply shipments are not known, TCHD is not currently making appointments for seasonal flu vaccine for adults. When new supplies of seasonal flu vaccine for adults become available at TCHD, notice will be given on this Website and on the TCHD Flu Hotline, 607-274-6609.

Sept. 25, 2009: TCHD has not received its complete order of seasonal flu vaccine as of today.  As a result, clinics scheduled for the period of September 28 – October 7 are postponed. More »

Influenza is a virus infection that spreads from person to person through coughing and sneezing.

Be Flu Safe Tompkins County is a community-wide initiative to decrease the spread of flu by promoting immunization and encouraging common prevention practices.

Here's what you can do:

Everyone over 6 months old should be immunized. Call your physician, the health department or school nurse to find out where you can get a flu shot.

Sneeze into a tissue then discard the dirty tissueCOVER YOUR SNEEZE!

Cover your coughs and sneezes with a tissue. Throw the tissue in the trash, then wash your hands.
Sneeze in your sleeve! Keep your hands clean by directing your cough or sneeze to your sleeve inside your elbow.

Wash your hands with soap and water WASH YOUR HANDS!

Wash your hands frequently with soap and water for 20 seconds (about the time it takes to sing “Happy Birthday” twice.) Teach your children to do this and set a good example by doing it yourself.

STAY HEALTHY!

Get plenty of rest, eat nutritious foods, stay physically active.

STAY HOME!

Flu is easily spread from person to person. If you’re sick, protect others by staying home and getting well. You’ll appreciate it when others do the same.
