City of Ithaca Youth Bureau - Summer Programs
Variety of camps, lessons and special events offered by the City of Ithaca Youth Bureau during the summer of 2009. Services for Children with Disabilities Inclusion Services at Cass and Stewart Park Day Camps, available for children with disabilities who require an aide. There is no additional fee for this support. Contact: Joanie Groome, Recreation Support Services, 273-8364. Information on Fees, Applications, Scholarships Program information and applications are distributed in the IYB Recreation Division’s “Summer Days and Fall Fun” brochure during mid-April to all students grades K-8 through schools within the Recreation Partnership. Extra copies are available at the IYB office, Cass Park and at your Town Hall. Fees listed are for members of the Recreation Partnership – residents of the Towns of Caroline, Danby, Dryden, Enfield, Groton, Ithaca, Newfield and Ulysses (including all students in Trumansburg schools), City of Ithaca and Village of Lansing. Contributions by these municipalities keep fees lower for residents. Payment in advance is required with applications. Fees for residents outside the Recreation Partnership are charged at the actual, unsubsidized program costs. Call the IYB for details. Scholarships are available based on financial need. Program Location: Cass Park Day CampDay Camp A half or full day camp with lots of great activities. Campers participate in swim lessons, arts & crafts lessons, drama, special events, recreation and games and more! Ages: 5 to 8 Schedule: Full days: 9:00am-4:00pm. Session 1: July 6-17, Session 2: July 20-31, Session 3: August 3 – 14.
Fees: $210/session for full days; $115/session for half-day sessions (morning or afternoon) for members of the Recreation Partnership. Before and after camp care is available: 7:30-9:00 a.m. $22 /session and 4:00-5:30 p.m. $22 /session.
Program Location: Summer YoutheatreTheater Two sections, one for ages 6-8 and one for ages 8-12 at the Ithaca Youth Bureau. Theatre games, improvisation, music and movement. Ages: 6 to 12 Schedule: Session 1: July 6-17, Session 2: July 20-31, Session 3: Aug 3–14. Time: 9:00 am – Noon.

Program Location: SHAKESPEARAMATheater Witches, ghosts, lovers, villains, fools! Work on scenes from Shakespeare’s plays, have fun exploring Shakespeare’s characters and learning Shakespeare’s language. Ages: 6 to 12 Schedule: July 20-31, 1:00–3:00 p.m.

Program Location: Junior Golf LessonsSports At Newman Golf Course. Ages: 8 to 17 Schedule: Session 1: July 6-17, Session 2: July 20-31, Session 3: Aug 3–14. Beginners weekdays 8:00-9:00 a.m.; Intermediate weekdays 9:00-10:00 a.m.

Program Location: Pottery Camp and MoreArt This two week camp will offer many pottery projects including making bowls and cups out of clay, as well as creating clay creatures and more. The camp will also offer other art activities such as mosaics, collage and outside, ‘environmental’ art. At least one field trip to view ceramic artwork will be included in each camp session. Instructor: Marcia Acerra. Ages: 8 to 12 Schedule: Session 1: July 6–17, Session 2: July 20–31, Session 3: August 3–14. Camp meets from 9 – noon.

Program Location: Stewart Park Day CampDay Camp A half or full day camp with sports programming and tennis instruction as well as the SPDC favorites canoeing, sailing, archery, crafts, dancing, fields games, drama, nature, swimming at Cass Park, The Special and more! Camp home base is Stewart Park-Large Pavilion. Campers will ride T-CAT buses to Cass Park for swimming every other day. Special programming for 14 year olds. Additional fees may apply for the 14 yr. old camper program for field trips and special events. Ages: 8 to 14 Schedule: Session 1: July 6-17, Session 2: July 20-31, Session 3: August 3–14, Session 4: (one week) August 17-21.

Program Location: Summer Music Program: This program is designed to encourage students to continue individual and ensemble skill development on their instruments during the summer months. The program will consist of four ensembles: a beginner band, a beginner orchestra, an advanced band and an advanced orchestra. Students must have their own instruments and be able to read music. Directors: Michael Allen and Katherine Allen. Ages: 9 to 18 Schedule: Class 1: Beginning Orchestra and Class 2: Advanced Band for youth in grades 4 – 6 will meet Tuesday and Thursdays from 6:30 – 7:15 pm. Class 3: Advanced Orchestra and Class 4: Beginning Band for youth in grades 7 – 12 will meet Tuesday and Thursday from 7:30 – 8:15 pm. All classes run from June 30 – July 30

Program Location: Wheel Throwing ClassesArt Learn basic techniques of pottery making on the wheel: clay preparation, centering, throwing cylinders and bowls, etc. Instructor: Marcia Acerra. Ages: 9 to 14 Schedule: Class meets Tuesday &Thursday from 6 – 8 pm. July 7 - 23.

Program Location: Learn to Sailsailing The Cornell Sailing School and East Shore Sailing Marina present one-week courses to teach sailing. All skill levels are welcome, participants must be able to swim the length of a pool (25 yards). Held at East Shore Sailing Marina. Ages: 9 to 16 Schedule: Session 1: Class 1: June 29 -July 3, 8:30 – 12; Class 2: 1 - 4:30pm. Session 2: Class 1: July 6-10, 8:30 – 12; Class 2: 1 - 4:30 pm. Session 3: Class 1: July 13-17, 1-4:30 pm. Session 4: Class 1: July 20-24, 1 - 4:30 pm. Session 5: Class 1: July 27-31, 1-4:30 pm. Session 6: Class 1: August 3-7, 1-4:30pm. Session 7: Class 1: August 10-14, 8:30-12:00pm; Class 2: 1:00-4:30pm.

Program Location: Bikes and Boards CampSports Held at the East Shore Skate Park, 2073 East Shore Dr. This one-week camp is designed for riders of all abilities. Learn how to ollie, drop into transition, skateboard etiquette and more! Basic group lessons, free ride time, and individual instruction. Equipment needed: skateboard or BMX bike, helmet, elbow pads and kneepads. Ages: 9 to 18 Schedule: Session 1: June 29–July 3 (3 days), Session 2: July 6-10, Session 3: August 17-21, Session 4: August 24-28. 9:00am - 4:00pm.
Fees: Session 1-$160; Sessions 2-4: $200 and includes lunch, for members of the Recreation Partnership.
Program Location: Cayuga ExplorersNature Sponsored by the Cayuga Lake Floating Classroom Project, for youth going into grade 5 and up. Spend a week getting to know Cayuga Lake aboard a real research vessel- the M/V Haendel. Participants learn boating skills, design their own lake-study projects, and explore the lore of the Lake through art, stories and games. Many activities for each session will be determined by the interests of the group. We might investigate lake legends and aquatic creatures, or the impact of global climate change. Along with 3-hour cruises each morning, we will visit parks around the lake for stream hikes, exploring and more. Limited to 24 participants; 12 minimum. Pick-up/Drop-off at East Shore Sailing Marina. Ages: 11 to 18 Schedule: Mornings, 8:45am - 12:30pm. Session 1: June 29-July 2 (Mon-Thurs); Session 2: August 25-28 (Tues-Fri).

Program Location: Soccer CampSports There will be an emphasis on skills development, but also on playing soccer and having fun. Training will include benchmark measurements of individual abilities before, during and after learning each skill to show progress and to allow campers to see how they have improved, and where they need to focus in their own development. There will be scrimmages/games every day, all with a sense of fun and playfulness. Specific skills to be developed: kicking with both feet, penalty kicks, trapping, dribbling, moving without the ball, passing and more. Camp Directors, Ian Shapiro and Jodi Maddren. Ages: 11 to 15 Schedule: Camp hours 9:00am – noon, August 17–21.

Program Location: STEWART PARK CAMPER IN TRAINING (CIT) PROGRAMA training program that teaches 15 yr. old campers the art of camp counseling and instruction, the CIT Program gives older campers the opportunity to gain leadership skills that will benefit them both in and out of camp. Their day will be filled with group learning, discussions, guest speakers, and hands on learning experience where each CIT is paired with Senior Camp counselors and instructors. As part of the program CITs are required to try different program specialty areas to develop skills and are put into real and simulated problem solving situations. As a group the CIT’s also plan and lead programs throughout the summer. Successful CIT candidates will be invited back to work the weeks of August 3rd and August 10th. As a reward for successful completion they will be paid a stipend for the work they do each week. Spots in this program are limited. Applicants must provide references from two adults when registering and fill out a part-time seasonal application. Ages: 15 to 15 Schedule: The program runs from July 6th to 31st, 8:45 am to 4:15pm. Successful CIT candidates will be invited back to work the weeks of August 3rd and August 10th.
